Artwork Requirements

(...and the odd disclaimer or two!)

We use a number of packages when producing the layout for Booklets and CD Label designs; we are able to incorporate your own logos, photos and designs as required.

We are able to accept such formats as Windows Metafiles as we still have control over individual elements within the layout, such as text positions and overlaid photos that have a background design. We can also accept jpg. images, but, remember that we are not able to manipulate individual elements within a jpg. file; thus we cannot re-size or re-position any text in the final layout. We try to accept Microsoft 'Word' documents and these are usually fine for text, but can pose a few problems for photos and logos/designs so it is advisable to provide us with a 'rough' to see if we can use the files properly. We are happy to put the layout together for you from a rough design or sketch; what we would ask for in this instance is, all the elements to be used (such as any backgrounds, photos and the text) as separate elements that we can use to compose the pages for you. These elements should be jpeg's for photos, most forms of plain text file will do for the words and any logos may be in scalable form so that they can be adjusted to fit; so logos may be supplied as jpeg's, gif's, wmf's etc.

The size of a booklet page is 120 m.m. x 120 m.m.; within this area we are able to print images (but not text) right to the edges if required. Normal practice is to allow a 'bleed' of at least 3 m.m. over the area so that the final printing may be trimmed with the image going right up to the edge of the page. Due to the fact that the left hand edge of the front page of the booklet is right up against what will be the right hand edge of the back page of the booklet, we try to use as little bleed on this edge as possible, however, printing tolerances dictate that we may have approx. 1.5 m.m. of bleed from the front onto this back page. Where a photograph is to feature on the front page of the booklet but does not occupy the full width or height, then it is not necessary to provide a bleed but any text should be kept away from the edges of the page; a margin of 4m.m. or so is wise as printing tolerance mean the image may drift from one copy to the next; this means centring up an image on the first page will not guarantee that another will be exactly the same! CD labels are always printed using ink jet technology and may be produced in colour (again, we are not able to offer colour matching facilities).

We are prepared to try your artwork to see if we can produce the printed goods from it; you may email files to us,( to mike@mikesounds.co.uk ) then we can advise if we are able to use your own work without further efforts. We are not able to colour match as we use inkjet printers for this in-house printing work. We prefer to work from good quality electronic images for logos etc. as against scans taken from stationery as these will not reproduce as cleanly and tend to look 'second-rate'. We do not offer 'J-Card' printing at present; the CD label and the 4 page booklet are our usual lines.
